Dive into the Water Cycle with WAI Wānaka’s New Short Film Water is Life
Wānaka, Friday 5 September 2025 – Local community organisation WAI Wānaka has launched a powerful new 60-second short film, Water is Life, designed to shine a spotlight on the Upper Clutha water cycle.
A Visual Story with Purpose
Directed by Tim Pierce of The Beards and creatively led by Zoe Hawkins of Brand+Butter, the film captures everyday locals engaging with water at different stages of the cycle. From tamariki to trustees, WAI staff to community members, the one-minute piece is packed with meaning.
“Water is life and when it is safe and healthy, so are we,” says Cat Dillon, CEO of WAI Wānaka.
“It’s vital we have a stable water cycle, but to play our part, we first need to understand it.”
Shot in Our Backyard
Filming took place at Lake Hāwea, Lake Wānaka, Bullock Creek and Glen Dene Station, with the crew noting the decline in water quality first-hand.
“We knew we’d see some less-than-ideal conditions, but the murky and barren spots really drove home why this film matters,” said Zoe Hawkins.
“It’s a reminder that we all need to understand what’s happening and take action to protect these lakes and rivers before it’s too late.”
More Than a Film – A Call to Action
The short film is supported by a new dedicated webpage on WAI Wānaka’s site. There, you can dive deeper into each stage of the water cycle, learn about pressures and external impacts, and discover practical steps we can all take to help. It also showcases the mahi WAI Wānaka is already doing to safeguard the region’s waterways.
