Dougal Allan: From Coast to Coast to America’s Cup
Wānaka’s endurance legend, Dougal Allan, is taking on a new challenge: sailing with Team New Zealand in the America’s Cup. After winning the Coast to Coast twice and completing 10 races, Allan has transitioned from endurance racing to the high-speed world of sailing, where he’s now a cyclor – powering the team’s 75-foot foiling monohull.
Dougal’s switch wasn’t easy. Used to long, steady effort in multi-sport races, the explosive bursts of energy required for his new role pushed him to his limits during rigorous trials. “It’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever done,” he says, reflecting on the demands of the cyclor position.
Introduced to the role by All Blacks strength coach Nic Gill, Dougal embraced the intense teamwork of sailing – a far cry from the solitary hours of training he was used to. “Working with a team has been an incredible new experience,” he adds.
For aspiring athletes, Dougal’s advice is simple: “Consistency is key. Small, regular steps forward lead to success.”
