The future of transport hit a speed bump last week in Changchun, China, where two flying cars collided during a rehearsal for an airshow.
The vehicles — known as electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) craft — are part of China’s push for a new “low-altitude economy,” which includes flying taxis, drone deliveries, and other services below 3,000 meters.
Manufacturer Xpeng Aeroht said the accident was down to “insufficient spacing” between the aircraft. Luckily, everyone walked away safely, though one pilot did suffer minor injuries.
The Jetsons… Not Quite Yet
The crash is a reminder that while flying cars sound futuristic and exciting, the technology still has some work to do before it becomes part of everyday life.
Here in Wānaka, we’re no strangers to daring aerial displays — the Warbirds Over Wānaka International Airshow has showcased some of the most impressive aviation stunts in the world. But imagine swapping the Spitfires and Pitts Specials for electric flying taxis? It’s a glimpse at what the future could hold… provided the tech can get the spacing right!
Would You Try It?
Flying cars promise convenience and speed, but after a rehearsal crash like this, would you feel confident hopping in one tomorrow? Or are you happier with two feet (or four wheels) firmly on the ground for now?
