Today, we had the pleasure of hosting Simon Telfer, Chair of the Wānaka Upper Clutha Community Board (WUCCB), to discuss some pressing issues and developments in our community. From the Long Term Plan to the Sticky Forest Environment Court Appeal, Simon shared valuable insights into what's happening around Wānaka and the Upper Clutha region. Here's a recap of our conversation.
Long Term Plan: Over 900 Submissions Received!
The Long Term Plan (LTP) is a cornerstone of our community's future, guiding the allocation of resources and setting priorities for the next decade. This year, the Wānaka Upper Clutha region saw an impressive engagement, with over 900 submissions received by the deadline on 28 July. This high level of community involvement shows just how passionate we are about shaping our town's future.
Key themes in the community board's submission reflect concerns and aspirations shared by many residents. These include:
Infrastructure Development: Ensuring that Wānaka's growth is managed sustainably, with a focus on transport, water, and waste services.
Environmental Protection: Balancing development with the need to preserve our natural surroundings, particularly in areas like Mt Iron and Sticky Forest.
Community Well-being: Investing in public spaces, recreational facilities, and community services to enhance the quality of life for all residents.
The Wānaka hearing for the LTP will take place on Tuesday, 27 August. This is a critical opportunity for the community to voice their opinions and influence the final plan.
Part 2
Sticky Forest Environment Court Appeal: What It Means for Recreational Biking and Walking
Sticky Forest is a beloved spot for recreational biking and walking, but it's currently at the center of an Environment Court Appeal. The outcome of this appeal could significantly impact the future use of this area. Simon explained that while there are concerns about development encroaching on this space, there is also a strong push to protect it for recreational use.
The Community Board is advocating for a solution that preserves Sticky Forest as a natural haven for bikers and walkers. This appeal highlights the broader issue of how we balance development with the need to maintain green spaces that are so vital to our community's health and well-being.
Stage 5 Shared Pathway: A New Connection Through the Marina
Construction is well underway on Stage 5 of the shared pathway, a project that promises to enhance connectivity in Wānaka. This stage will take the pathway through the Marina, creating a seamless link for walkers, runners, and cyclists. Simon emphasized the importance of this development in promoting active transport and reducing car dependency in our town.
Once completed, the shared pathway will offer residents and visitors alike a safe and scenic route through some of Wānaka's most beautiful areas. It's a step forward in making our community more accessible and environmentally friendly.
Mt Iron Reserve Management Plan Update
Mt Iron is another area under careful consideration, with the WUCCB working on a management plan to ensure its protection and enhancement. Simon provided an update on the progress of this plan, which aims to balance public access with conservation efforts.
The plan includes measures to control invasive species, improve walking tracks, and ensure that Mt Iron remains a cherished recreational spot for future generations. Public input will be crucial in finalizing this plan, so keep an eye out for opportunities to have your say.
What Is the Community Board?
For those new to the area or unfamiliar with its workings, the Wānaka Upper Clutha Community Board is a group of elected representatives responsible for making decisions on local matters. The board plays a crucial role in shaping policies and projects that directly impact our daily lives, from infrastructure development to environmental conservation.
The WUCCB also hosts regular "Share with Us" sessions, where residents can engage directly with board members. The next session is scheduled for 4 September at Paetara Aspiring Central. Whether you have a specific issue to raise or simply want to learn more about what's happening in our community, these sessions are an excellent opportunity to get involved.
Stay Engaged!
As our town continues to grow and evolve, staying informed and engaged is more important than ever. Whether it's through attending hearings, participating in "Share with Us" sessions, or simply staying up-to-date on local news, your voice matters in shaping the future of Wānaka and the Upper Clutha region.
Thanks again to Simon Telfer for joining us in the studio today and providing these important updates. We look forward to seeing how these projects develop in the coming months!
