Learning te reo Māori isn’t just about language — it’s about connecting with culture, community, and identity. We caught up with Georgina Cleave, kaiako for Te Ara Reo Māori (He Pī Ka Pao) | Level 1 & Level 2, to talk about her journey into teaching and what students can expect from her classes.

What inspired you to start teaching te reo Māori?

Georgina’s passion for te reo began with her own learning journey. What started as curiosity soon became a calling — she wanted to give others the same opportunity to connect with the language and the culture. Teaching, for her, is a way to pass on knowledge, strengthen identity, and keep te reo Māori thriving for future generations.

What can people expect in your class?

Expect plenty of laughter, energy, and encouragement. Georgina says her classes are hands-on and interactive — you’ll be speaking, listening, and practicing from day one. Each session builds confidence, and no one is left behind.

Is it beginner-friendly?

Absolutely. The He Pī Ka Pao programme (Level 1 & 2) is designed for newcomers, so you don’t need any prior knowledge. If you’ve always wanted to learn but felt a bit nervous about starting, this is the perfect place.

What’s the vibe like?

In a word: supportive. Georgina works hard to create a relaxed and fun environment. Students cheer each other on, celebrate milestones together, and build friendships along the way. It’s about learning, but also about belonging.

What’s the most rewarding part of teaching?

For Georgina, the highlight is watching students grow — not just in language skills, but in confidence. Seeing learners introduce themselves in te reo Māori, hold conversations, and proudly share their knowledge with whānau and community is what keeps her motivated.

Why does learning te reo matter today?

Te reo Māori is a taonga — a treasure. Georgina believes that more people learning and speaking te reo helps keep the language alive and strengthens our shared sense of identity as Aotearoa New Zealand. It’s about respect, connection, and passing something meaningful to the next generation.

Thinking about it? Here’s how to join

If you’ve been wondering whether now is the time, Georgina says just go for it. The classes are beginner-friendly, full of support, and you’ll be surprised how quickly you pick things up.
