As Otago hunters prepare their decoys and check their gear for the opening of the 2025 game bird season this Saturday, May 3, local farmers like David and Susan Hill are being praised for their vital role in wetland conservation and supporting hunter access.
π± Farming for Waterfowl and Wildlife:
-
David Hill, who farms sheep and beef near Omakau, has transformed parts of his property by creating multiple ponds to support waterfowl and hunters.
-
With support from Otago Fish & Gameβs Habitat Enhancement Fund (HEF), the Hills have:
-
Planted native shrubs and trees
-
Fenced off ponds and waterways to create safe nesting areas
-
-
Mr Hill said the improvements benefit not just ducks but local birdlife overall β providing shelter and enhancing biodiversity.
"You've got to have good water, and everybody in New Zealand needs good water. I was doing my wee bit, and I feel quite satisfied really." β David Hill
π¦’ Positive Changes Noted:
-
Since building his first pond in 2008, Mr Hill has noticed:
-
More swans nesting
-
Increased hatching rates during nesting season
-
More native birds like fantails visiting his property
-
"I enjoy seeing the birds flying... and itβs quite a joy." β David Hill
π€ Conservation and Hunting: A Vital Partnership:
-
Jamie Ward, Otago Fish & Game operations manager, said the Hills demonstrate how farming and conservation can thrive together:
"Their commitment to creating quality habitat isn't just good for game birds β it's supporting biodiversity across their property."
-
Access to private farmland is crucial for maintaining game bird hunting traditions in Otago.
-
Farmers like the Hills, who open their land to hunters, foster opportunities for hunters without their own access β including junior hunters and those with special needs.
π£ Key Reminders for Hunters:
-
Respect farmland
-
Leave gates as you find them
-
Always seek permission before entering private land
The 2025 game bird season opens Saturday, May 3.
