Preferred operating scenario recommended for Wānaka Airport

QLDC Strategic Projects Manager Paul Speedy said the preferred scenario reflects strong feedback from the community.

More than 1,100 people took part in the review process, with many expressing support for a low-impact airport that focuses on local needs while strengthening the airport’s role in emergency response and resilience.

The review also highlighted opportunities to improve the airport’s ability to respond to emergencies, support emerging low-emission aviation technologies, and unlock new economic and community benefits through carefully planned non-aviation land use at the airport site.

There was also strong support for growing opportunities for local aviation businesses and training.

However, the review found little support for larger domestic aircraft, international flights, or closing the airport altogether. Many people raised concerns about increased tourism pressure, the need for major infrastructure upgrades, and the potential impacts on existing airspace users.

Mr Speedy said the preferred option responds to those concerns by avoiding large aircraft operations while still allowing the airport to meet future aviation needs.

He added that work already underway to meet mandatory Civil Aviation Authority safety and operational requirements would support the level of activity proposed under the preferred scenario.

The report and its recommendations will be considered by the full Queenstown Lakes District Council at its meeting on Thursday 19 March 2026.

If councillors support the recommendation, council staff will begin work on a revised Wānaka Airport Master Plan, with further community consultation expected as part of that process.

The Wānaka Airport Future Review was commissioned in 2024 following significant community interest in the airport’s long-term direction, upcoming aviation compliance requirements, and the need to develop a new master plan for the facility.
