In the heart of Central Otago, a group of seven innovative students from Cromwell College are making waves in the Young Enterprise Scheme with their business, Second Harvest Sips. Taine, Sam, and their teammates have come together to tackle a significant issue: food waste. Every year, approximately 6,164 tons of fruit go to waste in Central Otago. However, Second Harvest Sips is turning this challenge into an opportunity.
A Delicious Solution
Second Harvest Sips has created a unique product—a smoothie pack consisting of apricots, peaches, nectarines, and apples. These fruits, though unsellable in traditional markets, are perfectly edible and nutritious. By using these "second harvest" fruits, the team aims to reduce food waste and offer a delicious, healthy product to their community.
The fruits are donated by local orchards, including Webs Orchard, Joneses, and Jacksons, who support the mission to minimize waste. The smoothie packs are not only a solution to food waste but also a testament to community collaboration and sustainable practices.
Rising Stars in the Young Enterprise Scheme
Competing in the Young Enterprise Scheme has been an incredible journey for Second Harvest Sips. They are currently sitting in the top 4 of Otago, having placed third in their validation challenge and fourth in their pitch. These achievements highlight their dedication, creativity, and business acumen.
Making an Impact
Since their launch, Second Harvest Sips has sold 92 packs at their school’s Matariki night, demonstrating strong support and interest from the community. This weekend, on August 3rd, they will be selling their smoothie packs at Light Up Winter in Cromwell. With their fruit supply running low, they encourage everyone to grab a pack while they can.
Looking Ahead
As they look to the future, Taine, Sam, and their team are exploring new ways to source fruit and expand their impact. Their journey with Second Harvest Sips is just beginning, but they are already making a significant difference in their community by promoting sustainability and reducing food waste.
