At Radio Wanaka, we're always excited to showcase the incredible talent and innovation emerging from our community. Recently, we had the pleasure of welcoming Sophie and Liam, two enterprising Year 13 students from Mount Aspiring College, to our show. They shared their inspiring journey of creating a business focused on sustainability and convenience.

The Birth of a Green Business

Sophie and Liam are part of a Year 13 enterprise group at Mount Aspiring College, dedicated to developing eco-friendly solutions for everyday problems. Their latest venture? Sustainable fire starters crafted from recycled materials. This ingenious idea not only addresses the need for an easy way to light fires but also emphasizes the importance of recycling and reducing waste.

What Makes Their Fire Starters Unique?

The fire starters created by Sophie, Liam, and their team stand out due to their innovative use of recycled materials. They collect offcut wax from dental technicians and recycled paper from their school, transforming these waste products into efficient fire-starting tools. By melting the wax and combining it with the paper in specially designed molds, they produce fire starters that are both effective and environmentally friendly.

Ease and Efficiency in One Product

One of the main goals of this project is to simplify the fire-lighting process. Traditional methods often require kindling and multiple steps to get a fire going. However, Sophie and Liam’s fire starters are designed to significantly reduce the time and effort needed. Ideally, users would only need one of their fire starters and a piece of wood to ignite a fire, minimizing or even eliminating the need for kindling.

A Bright Future for Sustainability

Sophie and Liam’s project is a testament to the innovative spirit and environmental consciousness of the younger generation in our community. Their sustainable fire starters not only provide a practical solution for households but also promote a greener, more resourceful way of living.

We are thrilled to support and share the stories of such forward-thinking students. Stay tuned to Radio Wanaka for more updates on local innovations and community-driven projects!
