We’ve all had that dinner moment — you’re halfway through cooking, feeling like a MasterChef star, and then something goes hilariously wrong. But one California family might just take the cake (or… the casserole) after their foster kitten, Wendy, decided to add a very special ingredient to the pot.
Security footage from the Merced SPCA shows little Wendy leaping up onto the stove — and dropping a dead mouse right into dinner. Yep, talk about “farm to table” gone too far.
The rescue group shared the photos online, joking that Wendy was “adding spice” to her human mum’s meal. They even called her “a thoughtful chef.” Sure, thoughtful… if you like your bolognese with extra protein.
😹 Only in California — or Maybe Wānaka?
Let’s be honest, this could totally happen here. We’ve got our fair share of furry freeloaders in Wānaka who love “helping” in the kitchen. One minute you’re chopping onions, the next your cat’s proudly delivering a “gift” from the backyard and looking at you like, “You’re welcome.”
Somewhere out there, a Wānaka cat is probably listening to this story thinking, “Amateur. I once brought in a bird and sat on the lasagna.”

🐾 Moral of the Story
Maybe check your dinner pot before serving up — especially if you’ve got a cat who thinks it’s Gordon Ramsay. And if your pet ever does something this wild, send us the pic — we’ll take any excuse to share a good local laugh on air.
Tune in to Radio Wānaka, where the stories are real, the cats are chaotic, and dinner’s always served with a side of humour.
