Senior Sergeant Darren Cranfield was back in the Radio Wānaka studio this week to share an update on local issues — including the arrest of a drunk driver over the weekend and a new AI scam currently targeting locals.
The scam uses convincing fake messages and voice technology to trick people into sharing personal or financial information. Police say these scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and urge residents to stay cautious, especially when messages or calls seem unusual.
“If something doesn’t feel right — it probably isn’t,” says Senior Sergeant Cranfield. “Always double-check before clicking any links, giving out details, or transferring money.”
Police are encouraging anyone who receives suspicious contact to report it immediately through the Netsafe website or by calling 105.
Staying alert and questioning what lands in your inbox could save you — or someone you know — from becoming the next victim.
