Supporting Mental Health in the Hunting Community
At Radio Wānaka, we launched the Good Stuff Grant thanks to Southern Lakes Panel beating to shine a spotlight on people doing meaningful mahi in our community the quiet helpers, the grassroots doers, the ones who make life a little better for others.
Today, we’re proud to announce our very first $500 recipient: Mental Hunts.
🦌 What is Mental Hunts?
Mental Hunts is a growing platform designed to support hunters with their mental well-being. It’s a space where hunters can learn, talk, connect, and break down some of the stigma around mental health — especially in a community known for resilience, independence, and time spent out in the bush, often alone.
The founders saw a clear gap: while hunting is an incredible lifestyle and passion, many hunters face real mental-health challenges from isolation to seasonal pressures to personal struggles that often go unspoken. Mental Hunts exists to change that.
Their mission is simple and powerful: education, understanding, and connection.
💬 Why it Matters
Mental health affects everyone, and hunters are no exception. In fact, they are part of a community where “toughing it out” is often the default.
Mental Hunts is helping shift that culture by creating:
-
Supportive online conversations
-
Educational resources
-
A place to share stories without judgement
-
A reminder that strength includes asking for help
The response so far has been overwhelmingly positive with hunters saying they finally feel seen, heard, and supported.
💛 How the Good Stuff Grant Helps
The $500 Good Stuff Grant will help Mental Hunts continue building resources, reach more hunters across the region, and grow the supportive network they’re creating.
It’s a small boost for a big-hearted idea exactly what the grant is all about.
Thank You to Southern Lakes Panelbeating
This Good Stuff Grant wouldn’t be possible without the support of Southern Lakes Panelbeating — backing local people doing good things. Their generosity helps us turn kind ideas into real impact here in Wānaka and Central Otago.
🙌 A Big Congratulations
A huge congrats to the team behind Mental Hunts for being the first Good Stuff Grant winner. Their passion for supporting mental health in the hunting world is creating real, lasting change.
We’re proud to back them and proud to help share their mahi with the wider community.
