Motatapu Gives Back: Over $20,000 Raised for Local Community

The team behind New Zealand’s biggest off-road event, the , has shared some good news following the 2026 event.
After a successful day on Saturday 7 March, more than $20,000 has been donated to local charities and community groups across the region.
Where the Money Is Going
A large portion of the funds has gone to long-time charity partner, the Queenstown Trails Trust, receiving $13,766.44 to support its ongoing work.
Other contributions include:
- $2,000 to Southern Lakes Sanctuary
- $1,500 to Arrowtown Charitable Trust (Macetown Track Fund)
- $1,500 to Mount Aspiring College
- $1,500 to Queenstown Gymnastics Club
These donations help fund everything from trail maintenance and conservation work, to youth programmes and community initiatives.

Motatapu Event Director Gemma Peskett says the support from participants plays a big role in making this possible.
“It’s something we’re really proud of, being able to give back to the community and the landscapes that make this event so special.”
Each year, a portion of entry fees goes towards charity, with many competitors also choosing to donate extra when they sign up.
Supporting Trails, Wildlife and Youth
The partnership with the Queenstown Trails Trust has now been running for more than a decade, helping maintain over 200 kilometres of trails across the Whakatipu Basin.
Chief Executive Mark Williams says the impact is significant:
“These funds help ensure the trails remain accessible for both locals and visitors to enjoy.”
Environmental efforts are also supported, with funding going towards predator control through the Southern Lakes Sanctuary, helping protect native birdlife in the region.
A Unique High-Country Event
The continues to attract thousands of competitors each year, taking on the stunning high-country terrain between Wānaka and Arrowtown.
Much of this course is only accessible to the public for one day each year, making it a pretty special experience for those taking part.
The 2026 event featured:
- 52km ultra run
- 42km trail marathon
- 47km mountain bike
- 15km trail run
- 4km junior trail run
Looking Ahead to 2027
Planning is already underway for next year, with the 2027 event locked in for Saturday 6 March.
